On The Edge (Claudia Kappenberg and Hermione Allsopp, 2022)

A huddle of four figures and four cubes made from single mattresses migrate through a city centre, on the edge of what is taken for normal and everyday. Bodies and cubes shift and balance, tumble and roll, while passersby look on or hesitate, occasionally swerving on their route to give space to the unusual occurrence. Reminiscent of travellers, migrants and all those without fixed abode these figures occupy public space in a way that is slightly unnerving, upsetting distinctions between private and public, us and them, stable and unstable.

The project is a collaboration between Claudia Kappenberg (performance) and Hermione Allsopp (sculpture) and was commissioned by Home Live Art, Hastings UK.
