Words in Silence
(1998) 3.10min, Video
Old Police Cells below Brighton Townhall, SOUNDWAVES FESTIVAL, July 2011, Brighton UK
Words in Silence evolved out of several attempts to convey a story and persistent failures in achieving this. A visual possibility eventually appeared in the use of the silent moments within the speaking, their facial expressions and gestures.
Seeking to find a voice for the female subject the video stays within an ambivalence of control and failure and plays with the paradoxical notion of speaking through silence.
This video is part of a body of work which includes Curse on my Dreams. An interview with an American war veteran promises the telling of a story after 50 years of silence but portrays mainly a private world of untold memories.
